THE COWBOY AND THE WOLF

A cowboy used to tend the cows near a forest. For sheer fun he would shout, "Wolf ! Wolf ! Help !" The farmers working nearby would come running to save the boy. But to their surprise they would see no wolf there. Seeing the men coming to the naughty boy burst into laughter. The farmers became angry. They, however, returned to their work.
The boy would often raise such a false alarm and the farmers were annoyed.
One day the wolf really came.
"Wolf ! Wolf !" cried the cowboy. People heard it. They took it to be the folly of the naughty boy. Nobody came to his help.
The wolf killed the cows and then it jumped upon the boy.

Moral: NOBODY BELIEVES A LIAR.

A FARMER AND THE GOOSE

A farmer had a magic goose. It gave a golden egg every day. He sold it in the market and amassed a lot of money. He was happy. But he was greedy.
"I can be richer in a day", said the farmer to himself, "if I get all the eggs of the goose at a time."
Greed overtook the farmer. With the hope of getting all the eggs at a time he cut her open only to find-nothing at all.
He felt sorry for his misdeed. He lost the goose and the golden eggs for good.

Moral: GRASP ALL LOSE ALL : ALL LOSE ALL : GREED IS BAD.

ON MAN AND ANIMALS

Some boys were playing ducks and drakes in a pond. Some frogs had been living there. The stones thrown by the boys hit the floating frogs and hurt many of them. Some were even dying. It delighted the boys. They were throwing some more stones at them.
At last, an old frog raised her head and said, "Why are you throwing stones at us ?" "We are just playing", replied the boys. "Boys, stop your sport", protested the frog, "What is play to you is death to us. The boys now felt sorry for their folly and stopped the cruel sport

Moral: WHAT IS PLAY TO ONE IS DEATH TO AINOTHER.

THE SUN AND THE WIND

Once the sun and the wind were quarreling over who was the stronger of the two. Suddenly they saw a traveler coming down the road.
"I see a way to decide our dispute", said the sun. "Whichever of us can make that man take off his coat shall be the stronger. You begin."
The wind was boastful. He began to blow an icy blast as hard as he could. But the harder he blew the more closely did the man pull his coat around him. At last the wind had to give up his hope.
Then it was the turn of the sun. He came out and shone in all his glory upon the man. The man felt the heat. He found it too hot to walk with the coat on. He put off his coat. The sun won the test.

Moral: PERSUASION IS BETTER THAN FORCE.

THE WOLF AND THE LAMB

A wicked wolf saw a lamb some distance down the stream.
"There is my supper", said the wolf to himself, "but I'll have to find some excuse for killing such a harmless animal."
So he shouted at the lamb, "How dare you make my drinking water dirty ?"
"How can I spoil your water ?" said the lamb, "It runs from you to me and not from me to you."
"Don't argue", roared the wolf, "I know you well. You said ugly things about me behind my back a year ago." "Sir", replied the lamb trembling, "a year ago I was not even born."
"Well", said the wolf, "if it were not you, then it was your father, and that amounts to the same thing.
Without another word, the wolf fell upon the helpless lamb and tore him to pieces.

Moral: (1) ANY EXCUSE WILL SERVE A TYRANT.(2) A TYRANT NEVER WANTS A PLEA

THE LION AND THE MOUSE

Once a lion was sleeping in his den. A little mouse was playing nearby. By chance, the mouse ran into the lion's nose. The sleeping lion rose in rage. He took the mouse in his paw and would have made an end of him.
"Kindly pardon me", pleaded the mouse, "Don't kill me. Forgive me this time. I shall never forget it. I will do you a good turn to repay your kindness."

The lion simply smiled at the mouse. He took pity on him and let him go. Not long afterward, the lion fell into a hunter's net. He let out a roar in rage and tried to get out of it. The mouse heard the roar and ran to the spot where the lion lay.

"Well, Your Majesty", said the mouse, "I am here at your service." Saying so he cut -the net with his sharp teeth. The net was cut open piece by piece. Soon the lion was set free.
"Thank you my little friend", said the grateful lion, "You are the greatest friend in my life."

Moral: AN ACT OF KINDNESS, HOWEVER SMALL, IS NEVER WASTED.

THE CAT AND THE MICE

Many mice lived in a house. They were doing a lot of harm to the house. The master was much annoyed and made a plan to get rid of them. He bought a cat to kill the rats.
The mice were in great difficulty. They could not move freely as before. They held a meeting to discuss the matter. Many plans were discussed and dismissed.
At last a young mouse stood up to speak. "I have a good plan for your consideration", said the little mouse, "Let us tie a bell around the cat's neck. Whenever he comes, the bell will ring and we will be warned." The plan appeared to be acceptable. All the mice thanked the young mouse for his good plan.
At this time an old mouse stood up. "The plan is good indeed !" said the old mouse, "But I have one question to put to the young mouse: who will bell the cat ?"

Moral: (1) IT IS EASY TO SAY BUT DIFFICULT TO DO : (2) EASIER SAID THAN DONE

THE HARE AND THE TORTOISE

Once a hare met a tortoise. The hare laughed at the slow pace of the tortoise. He made fun of the tortoise's steps. "Enough of your boasting",said the tortoise, "I may be slow but I am steady. Let us get on with a race.

The hare accepted the race with a smile. He was sure of winning the race.
The race was on one fine morning. The hare ran fast. He was much ahead of the tortoise. He stopped to wait for the tortoise to come along. He waited long and Iay down to rest. He soon fell asleep. But the tortoise moved on and on steadily without pause. He passed the sleeping hare and neared the goal.

The hare suddenly woke up and saw the tortoise ahead of him. He started running as fast as he could. But he was too late to save the race. The tortoise had touched the line.

Moral: SLOW AND STEADY WIN THE RACE.

THE FOX AND THE CROW

A crow took away a piece of meat and sat at the top of a tall tree to enjoy his prize. A fox saw it.
"If I plan rightly", said the fox to himself, "I shall have the meat for my meal',The fox sat under the tree. He said in a sweet voice, "Good day, mistress Crow. How beautiful you look! Your voice must be very sweet."

The vain crow was pleased at his words. She wanted to please him with her song.She opened her mouth wide to caw a song.

Down dropped the piece of meat ! The fox caught it before it touched the ground.He walked away slowly advising the silly crow, "The next time someone praises your beauty, be sure to hold your tongue."

Moral: (1) DON'T TRUST A FLATTERER. (2) A WISE HEAD MAKES A CLOSE MOUTH.

It was winter, A grasshopper who had always been happy was now hungry. He had no food. He hopped to an ant who was drying grains in winter sun.
"I am dying from hunger", said the grasshopper with folded wings, "will you please give me a few grains of corn ?"
"Why did you not save for winter ?" said the ant, "what did you do during summer ?"
"I was too busy", said the grasshopper, "All day I sang."
"Now dance", said the angry ant.

Moral: SAVE IN SUMMER OR SUFFER WINTER.

THE DOG AND THE SHADOW

The dog and the shadow

Once a dog found a Piece of meat.He ran ran ran out ran ran out to enjoy it lonely. As he was crossing the bridge over a canal, he was his own shadow in the water. He thought that it was another dog with a piecce of meat in his mouth. "I must have that piece of meat as well", said the dog to himself.
The dog was greedy indeed. He didn't know that the shadow was his own image. His greedy mouth opened to bark at it. Out dropped the piece of meat and. He was sorry for his foolishness. But it was too late

Moral : Grasp all, lose all.

It was winter. A farmer was returning from market. Suddenly he saw a snake lying half dead with cold by the roadside. The farmer took pity on the dying animal. He took it home and put down by the hearth.

The Children watched the snake with greatinterest. They were nonpay to see it slowly come to life again. One of them knelt down to stroke the Snake. Soon the animal raised its head to bite the boy. The farmer who was nearby Killed the snake with a stick to save the boy.

Moral : Don't expect gratitude from the wicked

The Carter and the god of Strength

A Carter was passing by a field. His code was loaded ripe corn. Suddenly wheels of the cart sank into mud he beat the bullock to pull them out. But the cart would not move. He then prayed to the god of Strength to help him. The god came to him and asked him to put his one shoulder to the wheel. He acted according to the advice of the god of Strength the court was began to move as before

Moral : Self-help is the best help.
